Herbie’s Up and Running

We’ve finally put the finishing touches on Herbie, our mobile community hub and retail coffee van, and he’s already hit the streets of Hull and the East Riding sporting some eye-catching HHCP branding.

Bought back in September last year and now fully fitted with a coffee machine, water boiler, fridge and mobile office capability, we want to take Herbie out regularly across the East Riding. The mission is to better engage and support those people in our area that may be socially isolated and cannot easily get to fixed location support services in the city.

We are striving to reach out to people out on the streets who don’t always have such easy access to a hot cuppa or even just a quick chat. Using a van instead of a fixed location is a great way for us to reach people across our region who are feeling socially isolated or anxious. This way we’ll be the ones doing the travelling and helping to eliminate any fears that they might have about leaving their comfort zone.

Herbie is also a great way for us to offer people we’ve moved into independent living additional help, giving them the opportunity to volunteer to come and work in the van with us. Volunteers will be given barista training and can come along with Herbie to any events we attend. It’s a great opportunity to build self-confidence and ideal for future job opportunities.

We will also be attending citywide events over the summer with Herbie in tow, such as awareness days, festivals and fairs. Selling freshly ground, quality coffee at these events whilst raising awareness and breaking stereotypes will enable us to make some money back that we can put into continuing to serve the local community.

If you’re interested in finding out more about our plans for Herbie or you’d like to get involved with volunteering, please email us at info@hullhomeless.co.uk or call 01482 231278.
